Cars and trucks built before about 1935 came on wire spoke wheels with small metal caps installed to seal the wheel hub on the axle. Those early HUBcaps were smaller than 3 in diameter, made of heavy gauge plated steel hammered onto the hub of the wheel. Their main function was to keep dirt out of the spindle nut and wheel bearings. In the mid ?30s, hubcaps became more decorative than functional. The ?dog dish? style was born, chrome hemispheres 9 inches in diameter, covering the lug nuts and the center of the wheel. About the same time, wheel technology advanced and spoke wheels were replaced by wheels formed from stamped steel.

Although bumper stickers are a worldwide phenomenon, it seems that Americans are more fascinated with the use of them than others. When driving down the highways and streets of the United States there is no telling what you might find emblazoned on one of these. So, when did all this begin? Well first of all you had to have cars with bumpers which didn’t happen until 1927 with the introduction of the Model A by Henry Ford. The first so-called bumper stickers were not stickers at all and were attached to the bumpers by wires. These first started showing up right before the onset of WWII and were rather large. The first person to actually make stickers that could be attached to a bumper is thought to be Forest Gill, a silk screen printer from Kansas who began making the bumper sticker in the 1930s.

Costly gasoline prices are forcing today’s consumers to preserve automobile fuel as much as possible. Unbeknownst to many, even an idling car is guilty of using up valuable fuel, not only unnecessarily wasting this expensive resource, but also causing danger to the environment and a risk to the health of many others. Idling may actually harm your vehicle, but that’s only the start. It can also be responsible for increasing pollution levels caused by gasoline burning in the atmosphere.
