Driving test standards vary the World over. In a European context the Driving Test in Ireland, while improving and continuing to evolve has a long way to go before it reaches Premier League status. One of the biggest problems with the Irish Driving Test is that there is currently no stipulation regarding the necessary level of tuition to be taken before sitting the Driving Test. In most European Countries there is a mandatory tuition requirement before being allowed to sit the Test.

It is extremely important for all non ? national Drivers or all those who are contemplating taking up Driving in Ireland for the first time to acquaint themselves with all the regulations before starting off!

Ireland, as a member of the European Union, has strict standards which are evolving continuously and ignorance of the rules, regulations, and legislation is no excuse in breaking the Law! It is worth pointing out that because of many insurance breaches and the incessant rate of accidents on the roads ,that we are all paying an excessive rate for our Car insurance .When this situation continues to improve we will all benefit.

Today we are going to continue our mini series on Driving Test Preparation by looking at our insider techniques. Really good skills inside the car will lead to outstanding performance outside on the road where it really counts.

Firstly let’s look at our resources. We have two feet, two eyes, two hands, two ears and one very large Brain which has the capability, when programmed, of more than 1000 Pentium Fours all firing at once. So from this we can deduce that it is the thinking processes that are the most important, other wise we would have been endowed with ten legs, twenty arms and probably just as many eyes.

Recently the Irish Minister for Transport Martin Cullen TD announced the introduction of a further 30 offences to the existing 4(!) Penalty Points that have been hidden away gathering dust for the last three years. Motorists are seemingly unaware of the tsunami about to be unleashed!

On the first of April 2006, (an appropriate date!), these additional offences will become live and Irish Motorists need to be alert and aware especially since there has also been promised a much greater Garda (Police) presence on the side of the road or in the middle, as the case may be (you know the annual ritual of hauling in speeding drivers to line the coffers!)

First of all let us say categorically, that passing the Driving Test is only the beginning of your driving career irrespective of how well you do on the day of the exam. It is going to take the average novice driver maybe three years of constant, regular driving, before he or she can then say ?I am now becoming an experienced driver. Please notice the emphasis on the word ?becoming?. Arrival on the Experienced Driver Podium will take much longer. I guess it really depends on the amount of driving one undertakes on a daily, weekly basis, the level of night-time driving, and also the traffic conditions during daily sorties will dictate how long this learning experience will take. To paraphrase Robert Oppenheimer, the inventor of the Atomic bomb?.. ?I am become a destroyer of worlds? This could be applied to many learner drivers who pass their Driving Test and then proceed to total their cars and those of other drivers in the weeks and months following the Test.

Just days away to the Introduction of the next round of Penalty Points it?s worth looking at the rationale behind this system. When you are starting your Driving career it is unlikely that you will instinctively know when you are doing wrong or indeed breaking the Law. If you have not taken Driving Lessons with a Professional School then you are going to be considerably at risk of flaunting some of the very basic rules of the road and in considerable danger most of the time.

The Driving Test is surrounded by Myth and Mystery and not a little confusion! It needn?t be this way if the candidate ignores all the horror stories from friends, workmates and relatives and approaches the task with a clear plan of action and a determined mind. Enter the Planning Department Chief stage left (or stage right if you are in one of those strange countries where Drivers drive on the wrong side of the road! only kidding!) This individual is usually known by the pseudonym? Instructor.
