Driving test standards vary the World over. In a European context the Driving Test in Ireland, while improving and continuing to evolve has a long way to go before it reaches Premier League status. One of the biggest problems with the Irish Driving Test is that there is currently no stipulation regarding the necessary level of tuition to be taken before sitting the Driving Test. In most European Countries there is a mandatory tuition requirement before being allowed to sit the Test.

It is extremely important for all non ? national Drivers or all those who are contemplating taking up Driving in Ireland for the first time to acquaint themselves with all the regulations before starting off! Ireland, as a member of the European Union, has strict standards which are evolving continuously and ignorance of the rules, regulations, and legislation is no excuse in breaking the Law! It is worth pointing out that because of many insurance breaches and the incessant rate of accidents on the roads ,that we are all paying an excessive rate for our Car insurance .When this situation continues to improve we will all benefit.

So, I have been on the road a lot, used to drive an 18 wheeler for a living, a Peterbilt I might say. In my truck driving days, we are going back about 19 years, I have dealt with a lot of traffic. It was reasonable at that time and people had respect for the other road user, well most of them did. That respect made it a whole lot easier to go to work every day. Work that mostly was 15 to 20 hours long. The majority was driving but a lot of time was spent loading and unloading in various weather conditions. In the summer time us truck drivers had to deal with vacationing tourists and in the winter time it was snow and ice. Quite challenging. Never had one accident and never cause one either. Did up a bunch of experience in regards to weather conditions and driving habits and most important courtesy and comradery. I always say every car driver should go drive an 18 wheeler for a year, it will teach them common sense.

I’m surprised there aren’t studies done about road rage and the use of cell phones. I get irritated by cell phone users driving badly. I just want to pinch their little heads off. I’ve seen no road rage statistics, but I have seen comparisons between cell phone usage, drunken driving, and resulting accidents. David J. Hanson, Ph.D. says, A study in The New England Journal of Medicine found that drivers who used mobile phones while driving were four times more likely to crash than those not, a rate equal to that for drunken driving at the .01 level. Dr. Hanson also points out, Those who die in traffic accidents are just as dead whether killed by drug use, fatigue or falling asleep at the wheel, alcohol intoxication, or inattention caused by cell phone use while driving.

The latest round of changes to the Irish Driving Test were implemented on, Feb. 14th 2005, as part of a chain of E.U.Directives. Test Candidates are now required to have a basic level of mechanical knowledge, which any good professional School of Motoring would have been teaching from day one in any event. The car of today is a very different beast compared with its grandparents and any driver, young or old, should have a range of skills that enable them to identify problems and take the necessary remedial action.

Today we are going to continue our mini series on Driving Test Preparation by looking at our insider techniques. Really good skills inside the car will lead to outstanding performance outside on the road where it really counts. Firstly let’s look at our resources. We have two feet, two eyes, two hands, two ears and one very large Brain which has the capability, when programmed, of more than 1000 Pentium Fours all firing at once. So from this we can deduce that it is the thinking processes that are the most important, other wise we would have been endowed with ten legs, twenty arms and probably just as many eyes.

It didn?t seem so long ago that the British were waiting for an exciting season of formula one racing. The difference this year was, that at last we would have a British driver at least fighting for wins if not the Formula one championship depending on how optimistic you are. Jenson Button had set some impressive lap times during the winter season and with the strength of Honda behind him, was ready to take on the might of Renault and Ferrari.

People spend a lot of time in their cars. Over two thirds of the working population travels to work by car and over a third of the country?s households have 2 or more vehicles. The roads are seemingly getting busier by the day, with many people taking their car to the local shops rather than walking. It is unsurprising then that road users spend a lot of time feeling irate about other peoples? driving abilities or should that be inabilities. The daily commute simply drives people mad! From the old man who creeps alongside you in his Rover so that you can?t change lanes, to the lorry that pulls out in front of you on the roundabout. Online car insurance company www.duck2watercarinsurance.co.uk carried out a survey of their customers to find out what really gets on peoples nerves.

Well winter is here and we were warned. Back in October the TV weather teams told us that this winter would be the worst for many years. Some quoted the worst for 10 years and some did the usual and quoted the worst ever. Already we have seen the gridlock in the UK and many motorists stranded overnight as they were caught out by snowstorms. The next day the TV weather teams are on the news saying we told you so, and for once I am on their side. So the message for this winter when driving is this, make sure you check the weather reports regularly, at least each night before you go to bed. If it states snow then be prepared the next morning to leave earlier or have plans to cancel. |
